The Alliance for Virginia’s Children recently cited a report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Voices for Virginia's Children that showed that by the end of the third grade, Virginia’s school children have a reading proficiency percentage “of 38% which is slightly better than the national average of 36%.”
Reading proficiency, “by the end of the third grade, for African American students is only 18% and 26% for Hispanics. Only 18% of low income students are reading proficiently by the end of the third grade.”
Reading proficiency is an important indicator to a child's future success in school. We need to pay attention! Be sure to read the full report!
